Insomnia

Night can be lonely
It finds you lying in the dark
Mulling it over
The choices seem so few and stark
You lie there trying
To sort the muddle in your head
You take to sighing
To sooth the gut that’s filled with dread
You change position
In hopes the thoughts will fade away
That’s not their mission
They want you wretched the next day
Your own eye lashes
Are making such a dreadful noise
Against the pillow
All hope of sleep the sound destroys
Why does it happen
That sleep eludes you when you know
Tomorrow’s vital
You needs your wits about you so
You start to panic
You’ve got to be at work by eight
Already manic
Your boss will skin you if you’re late
You try deep breathing
3 in 3 out it’s going great
But who’d believe it
You start to hyperventilate
The flocks are gathering
You make a stab at counting sheep
The bastards scatter
So now you’ll never get to sleep
Hallucinating
Even though you are wide awak
You’re having nightmares
There’s not much more that you can take
So you surrender
Replay disasters through your mind
There’s no defender
‘gainst thoughts destructive and unkind
The clock is ticking
The night is slipping into day
Maybe you’re sickening
For a mysterious malaise
And then it’s morning
You’re sure you didn’t get a wink
You partner’s yawning…
You snoring’s getting worse they think…
Night can be lonely
